Outstanding fundraisers honoured

Each year the Association of Fundraising Professionals presents the Maritime Philanthropy awards, to recognize outstanding individuals, businesses and volunteer groups for their commitment to charities and nonprofit organizations.

This year, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region made two nominations for these awards: “Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser” and “Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist”. We are proud to share a bit about our two fantastic nominees:

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser – Bernice Arsenault:

The term powerhouse doesn’t even begin to describe Bernice Arsenault. Diagnosed with breast cancer in August, 2001, Bernice began fundraising for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure the following year. Since then Bernice has been a stalwart supporter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region, earning the title of Top Fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure Halifax Run Site from 2006 to 2011. In 2010, Bernice was the second highest fundraiser in all of Canada for the Run for the Cure! Over the past ten years Bernice has fundraised well over $109,653 – entirely on her own!

How does Bernice continue to raise such an incredible amount each year? Her method is simple:  Bernice asks anyone and everyone she meets to contribute whatever they can.  Often spotted throughout the Halifax area with a pledge sheet in hand, or raffle tickets for sale, Bernice proudly sports her Run for the Cure t-shirts, encouraging others to get involved in whatever way they can. Her unwavering optimism warms hearts, while her determination and drive give hope to all who meet her.

Outstanding Corporate Philanthropist – Big Pink Sightseeing:

The folks at Big Pink Sightseeing have truly paved the way for innovative corporate philanthropy by taking a big idea and rolling with it! Big Pink Sightseeing tours have brought their support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region to the forefront of everything that they do.  Not only are they raising funds by donating $1 from each hop-on hop-off tour ticket sold, they have also generously donated the valuable advertising space on their buses – proudly declaring: “there is never enough pink until there is a cure.”

This very public commitment to CBCF – Atlantic Region demonstrates their passion to drive change, and motivates others to jump on board and join the movement to create a future without breast cancer.

The Big Pink Sightseeing tours first launched in Saint John, New Brunswick in May 2010, and soon became the talk of the town. At the end of the season the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region was presented with a cheque for over $33,000!

Since then Big Pink Sightseeing has expanded, and can now be found in Charlottetown, PE, as well as Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia. With their popularity and notoriety spreading throughout these cities, the Big Pink Sightseeing tours raised an incredible $60,000 in 2011!
