In realizing our mission and vision, the Foundation is committed to serve as an effective advocate. This means demonstrating our commitment to those living with and affected by breast cancer, voicing the need for a positive quality of life today, and in the future.
It's not every day that the government pledges $8 million in support for women's breast health.
Your support has enabled us advocate to the four provincial governments on breast screening issues and the results have been tremendous:
Newfoundland and Labrador: CBCF – Atlantic Region appealed to the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial government to provide funding in their budget to replace 12 analog mammography machines with full field digital machines. We are proud to announce that the government included funding in their budget and have followed through on their commitment. As of 2010, all 12 units were in place.
Prince Edward Island: CBCF – Atlantic Region met with former Minister of Health, Hon. Doug Currie, to encourage support for a fully digital screening program. CBCF – Atlantic Region asked the Government of Prince Edward Island to support funding for three full-field digital mammography machines. The Government of PEI not only followed through with funding for the equipment, but they lowered the age for screening eligibility from 50 to 40 and set up a central booking number.
New Brunswick: CBCF – Atlantic Region continues to work with the New Brunswick Cancer Network to advance the province’s breast screening program. Recent discussions were about the adoption of a data infrastructure project – which is currently being developed by the Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program and the Breast Screening Program for Newfoundland and Labrador. The data infrastructure project captures a patient’s information in a single database throughout their entire breast cancer journey and allows for real-time tracking of the program.
Nova Scotia: CBCF – Atlantic Region organized a gathering with MLAs to ensure that the Government of Nova Scotia upheld its commitment to replace all analog mammography units with full-field digital mammography units, and continue their support of the Nova Scotia Breast Screening Program. As a result of the impactful discussion between CBCF – Atlantic Region and the MLAs, the Government of Nova Scotia has remained committed to supporting the province-wide breast screening program.
