A future without breast cancer by 2020

2020: The Future Without Breast Cancer

The BC/Yukon Region is committed to realizing a future without the fear of breast cancer by 2020, when breast cancer is a very manageable and treatable disease.

We have identified a model for collaboration, an action plan and the tools required to make this vision a reality.

Partnership in action

In 2007 the Foundation’s BC/Yukon Region organized a day-long summit involving British Columbia’s leading minds in cancer care and women’s health.  Two questions were asked at the Summit:

  1. Can we get to a future without breast cancer by the year 2020?
  2. If so, how do we get there?

An outcome of the Summit – a critical milestone in the history and future of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – BC/Yukon Region – was the establishment of the goal for 2020 by the Foundation with its partners in the breast cancer cause, which include:

  • Government of British Columbia
  • Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – BC/Yukon Region
  • Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division (CCS)
  • BC Cancer Foundation (BCCF)
  • Health Sciences Association of BC (HSA).

All parties agreed that a future without the fear of breast cancer by 2020, when breast cancer is a manageable and easily treated disease, was indeed possible through a cross-agency initiative. A task force and five related working groups were formed to develop strategies to address breast cancer issues across five recommended areas of work:

  • prevention
  • early detection
  • treatment
  • research
  • emerging issues in the health care workforce.

The task force's five working groups have finalized their reports and a consolidated plan is nearing completion. Key priority projects that will enable us to reach our 2020 goal have been identified and the work is set to begin in earnest.

The Foundation’s BC/Yukon Region is proud of its role as a catalyst – both in convening the summit and in the work that has followed. We continue to work together with our health partners and to offer our support and advocacy to raise the resources required to achieve our shared vision for 2020.
