SCREENING MAMMOGRAPHY
WHEN SHOULD I GET A MAMMOGRAM?
The majority of breast cancer occurs in women who are age 50 and older. Research has shown that regular screening mammograms are very effective at detecting breast cancer for women aged 50 – 69. Accordingly, all provincially organized screening programs in Canada encourage women aged 50 – 69 to have regular screening mammograms.
The research evidence is not as clear for screening mammograms in women who are under age 50 or over age 70. Screening guidelines for women under 50 and women over 70 vary by province and territory. If you belong to either of these age groups, contact your doctor or your local screening program to determine the guidelines in your region.
There is some evidence that women aged 40 – 49 may benefit from screening mammograms, particularly women who are at greater risk for developing breast cancer. Women in their forties are encouraged to talk to their doctor about the pros and cons of screening mammography in their personal situation to make an informed decision.
All women who have screening mammograms are encouraged to participate in their province or territory’s organized breast screening program, if they are eligible.
If you are outside the age range or otherwise unable to access your local organized screening program, you can still ensure you receive a good quality mammogram by going to a place that has been accredited by the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) Mammography Accreditation Program.
Remember that the time to go for screening mammograms is when you feel fine and do not have any breast symptoms. If you are ever worried about a breast problem, whatever your age, see your doctor.
