PERSONAL BREAST CANCER HISTORY
If a person has had breast cancer before, they have an increased risk of getting breast cancer again.
The return of cancer is called a recurrence. Breast cancer can return in the same breast as the original cancer, in the other breast, or in another part of the body. Recurrence can occur years after the first cancer was diagnosed and treated. It does not necessarily mean that the treatment did not work.
Because having a personal history of breast cancer is a risk factor, a patient's follow-up care after cancer treatment will include close monitoring with regular mammograms, clinical breast exams, and other tests as recommended by a doctor to detect recurrence (if it happens) as soon as possible.
