RISK AND RISK REDUCTION > Why are risk factors important?

WHY ARE RISK FACTORS IMPORTANT?

Risk factors are important because they can change the way you understand and act on your risk for breast cancer. Some factors are modifiable, which means you can make changes in your life to try and reduce your risk. An example of a modifiable risk factor is the use of hormone replacement therapy.

Other factors are not modifiable. For example, you cannot change your age or the genetic make-up that you inherited from your parents. It is still important to understand these, even if you can not change them. In response to the presence of some non-modifiable risk factors, you and your doctor might consider a preventive therapy or change the way you monitor your breast health.
