Your Dollars at Work

Thanks to the support of our donors, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is the largest charitable funder of breast cancer research in Canada. Since 1986, CBCF, in partnership with our community, has invested over $360 million to fund more than 1,400 relevant and innovative research projects that have led to progress in breast cancer prevention, earlier detection, diagnosis, treatment and care.

It is through the generosity of our donors that we are able to invest in the best and brightest minds across the country dedicated to breast cancer research. Since the mid 1980s, mortality rates for breast cancer have decreased by 44% and survival rates have climbed to 88% in large part due to research advancements.

Here are just some of the strides that have been enabled by donors like you:

  • Our $9 million investment with Stand Up To Cancer Canada – Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation Breast Cancer Dream Team, supported by CIBC, which will design new targeted treatments for aggressive breast cancers and aim to improve the survival rate for individuals diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.

  • Our $5.7 million investment and partnership between the Institute of Cancer Research and CBCF to support a pan-Canadian research team investigating Breast Cancer in Young Women.

To our knowledge this funding, made possible by our donors, is one of the largest amounts ever granted in Canada to study breast cancer in young women.

  • Research by Dr. Mohammad Akbari and his international team who recently identified a new breast cancer susceptibility gene (RECQL). Individuals with the mutated gene have a 50 per cent chance of developing breast cancer.

Thanks to your support, this discovery will have significant implications for prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

  • Research Dr. Samuel Aparico and Dr. Marco Marra has decoded the genetic make-up of triple negative breast cancer, which accounts for 25 per cent of breast cancer deaths.

This research finding, made possible by donor dollars, will lead to more effective treatment of the disease.

  • At CBCF, we understand that a breast cancer diagnosis can be difficult. Our recent merger with Willow Breast & Hereditary Cancer Support has enabled us to expand our services to the breast cancer community and provide support and information programs to women and men living with a breast cancer diagnosis, as well as their families, friends and caregivers, at any stage of their experience.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, all of these services are provided free of cost.
