ETHNO-CULTURAL COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION IN HEALTH:
Executive Summary

The increasing cultural and linguistic diversity of BC's population requires that the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon Region assess not only its method of information delivery and dissemination, but also the content and context of the information for cultural appropriateness and community relevance. Programs, services and materials intended to educate the public about breast cancer/breast health should be vetted through a cultural lens to confirm relevance and meaning for the targeted community. This report provides valuable recommendations that the Foundation will begin implementing to better reach all constituencies throughout BC and the Yukon.

InspireHealth is a not-for-profit society that provides an integrated cancer care program for people with cancer and their families. Their program integrates healthful nutrition, exercise, emotional and spiritual support with conventional cancer treatment for a comprehensive whole-person approach to care. This integrative approach honours the value of conventional cancer treatments while, at the same time, recognizes the importance of supporting mind, body and spirit.

CBCF, BC/Yukon Region has funded the development of InspireHealth’s Research Information System. This system, which searches medical databases world-wide for the latest in integrative cancer care research, is the only one like it in the world. Every article in the system is relevant to cancer and integrative medicine and has been identified by InspireHealth physicians as important. Click here to visit the InspireHealth website.
