Research Grant

The Region supports high-quality research in all areas including biology of breast cancer, prevention, screening, early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, cancer control, psychosocial, health care delivery and outcomes.

The Region’s investments are made with a strategic focus on the impact on the lives of those most affected by breast cancer, including reducing disease burden; improving women’s experiences/quality of life; and increasing knowledge about breast cancer prevention and treatment.

We release a call for breast cancer research proposals once a year to researchers in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Grants may be awarded for individual projects for up to three (3) years for a maximum amount of $125,000 per year, and must take place within the Region.

Applications must be categorized into one of the following:

1. Basic Biomedical Research (laboratory science)

Fundamental laboratory and pre-clinical investigations addressing biology of breast cancer, etiology, prevention, early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment (discovery and development), development and characterization of model systems.

2. Clinical Research (patient-oriented)

Clinical projects and epidemiological studies addressing etiology, prevention, early detection, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment (clinical applications), evaluation of delivery methods and interventions

3. Health Services and Policy Research (the health delivery system)

Financial and health-care delivery issues such as quality of care, access to care (including timeliness and equity) and factors associated with variations in quality and access.

4. Psychosocial, Cultural and Environmental Determinants of Health (population health)

Projects addressing psychosocial issues, supportive care, survivorship and outcomes, quality of life issues and interventions, behavioural research, cancer control, education, communication
