YOUTH ACTION COMMITTEE(YAC)

The Future is in your Hands

Do you want to be a part of something you believe in but think you’re too young to make change in your community? You’re not!

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation recognizes that young people are the movers and shakers of the future. That’s why, in 2004, the Foundation developed the Youth Action Committee (YAC) - a group of dedicated young leaders who have a passion for raising awareness about breast health in their schools and communities. This group of young leaders interact and engage with youth to enhance the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s youth-oriented programs. YAC members work in their communities to enhance their peers’ knowledge about the importance of early detection and manageable risk reduction. YAC members are creative, out-of-the-box thinkers, always looking for new ways to raise awareness and promote the importance of leading healthy and active lifestyles as a part of reducing your risk of breast cancer.

YAC is not a conventional youth council. Our YAC members are spread out across the region in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. The distance between members means that we must use tools like email, Facebook and other social media platforms to stay connected! Even though YAC is spread throughout our region, that doesn’t mean that we don’t do hands-on work in our communities. Our YAC members often take the initiative to start smaller YAC groups in their city, school or university, which organize breast health campaigns, events and fundraisers. YAC members may also represent the Youth Action Committee at community events or other Foundation events that happen during the year.

If you are between the ages of 14 and 24 and would like to become an essential link in creating a future without breast cancer, you may be the perfect candidate to join our Youth Action Committee. We are always looking for new members who can give us their great ideas on how we can get more youth involved and generate more awareness!

To learn more about YAC or to become a member email yac@cbcf.org; call 1-866-302-2223; or visit Volunteer.

Come Unhooked with Youth Action Committee!

The Youth Advisory Council is proud to present our brand new iPhone App & blog - two places where youth can feel comfortable learning about breast health and sharing their experiences with breast cancer.

Our Youth Action Committee members recognized that there are tons of great breast cancer blogs out there for older women but wondered, where is there space for a youth perspective? Unhooked: A Youth Action Committee Blog is our answer! Unhooked is a place where youth can learn about breast health, Youth Advisory Council groups and campaigns, and share their stories about breast cancer. We welcome all youth to submit posts in any format that they find appropriate. We accept prose, poetry, video, photography, visual art and anything else you can
dream up – as long as it covers the topics of breast cancer, breast health or the importance of living a healthy lifestyle! Visit www.unhookedYAC.wordpress.com and get YACking!

Our YAC members know the importance of meeting youth where they are at and we hope that our iPhone app does just that! Get breast health information on the go by downloading the free Unhooked YAC app from the App Store. Our app includes tons of info about breast health, useful utilities that help you remember to check and track your daily activity. We even have a section just for dudes! So, check it out by visiting the App Store on your iPhone (search: Unhooked YAC).
